The legal definition of IPM is really pretty dull reading. To put it in simple terms, IPM is determining what makes your property attractive and accessible to pests, where they find food and water, and how they got there. Properly identifying the pest will usually answer the why, and a thorough inspection will answer the how. It is then up to you to determine what your tolerance level is for the target pest, and at what level you want to take action. A Pest Management Professional who is trained in IPM will be able to put all of the parts of the puzzle together and provide you with an action plan.
Physically altering the pests’ environment, eliminating food and water sources, and removing infested items will be part of the plan. Trapping, vacuuming, using pheromones, and appropriately labeled pesticides may also be included.
